JTAG/boundary-scan software
Both hardware and software are needed to control the embedded boundary-scan logic and drive data through the Test Access Port (TAP) and boundary-scan chains. This logic, accessed through the JTAG interface, allows existing test and measurement systems to be enhanced with extra capabilities to improve quality control and save time in test development and the diagnosis of faults.

Tools for the entire lifecyle
The JTAG/boundary-scan capabilities present on a PCBA can be used throughout its entire lifecycle for various test and debug purposes.
Design and (field) service
In design and (field) service the engineer needs to find the cause of the failure present. Interactive software tools that make it simple to apply a stimulus or a sequence of stimuli to (a part of) the circuit and observe its response are ideal for this application. With JTAG/boundary-scan a basic connection of a TAP cable and power is all that’s required to start the interactive measurements. No further preparation is needed. Boundary-scan measurements are as simple as measurements with conventional instruments like multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
Production
While a design or service engineer may use interactive tools to perform measurements to find the cause for a failure present, the production engineer faces a completely different challenge.
In production it is not always known if one or more failures, or manufacturing defects, are present on the unit under test (UUT). Here the challenge is to build a series of tests, able to determine that none of the possible manufacturing defects are present on the target UUT. Interactive debug tools are no longer sufficient and automated test tools are also needed. Tools that can generate tests and accurate fault coverage reports as execute the tests automatically within a sequence.
