NICHIA and Zumtobel focus jointly on sophisticated human-centric lighting

News

NICHIA has joined forces with Zumtobel, a supplier of holistic lighting solutions, to provide LED lighting with advanced human-centric lighting benefits.

The partnership has been a key factor for Zumtobel to develop a new offer to its customers. The recently launched ZUMTOBEL Spectrum is a lighting solution developed for its luminaires which harness proprietary technologies developed by NICHIA – especially those designed within Optisolis and Vitasolis – to produce a color spectrum that has daylight properties as reflected by nature instead of mimicking the conventional sky daylight spectra like other high CRI LED solutions available in the market. The unique spectrum has been developed to stimulate human’s productivity and comfort. Initially, Zumtobel’s LIGHT FIELDS III and ONDARIA luminaires are equipped with ZUMTOBEL Spectrum, with more models expected to soon harness the new technology.

“The demand for high quality, human-centric LED lighting continues to grow,” explains Satoshi Okada, General Lighting Business Planning Manager of NICHIA Japan. “NICHIA has been a pioneer in LED development for human-centric lighting, having already introduced its innovative Vitasolis technology platform in 2019. With over 65 years of research into the production and application of phosphor and LED development, NICHIA is actively engaged in making scientific breakthroughs in lighting, improving its quality and our relationship with it.”

Research reveals the relationship between light and human behaviour. Humans not only recognise brightness and colour of light, but human circadian rhythm can be affected by specific wavelengths of light, especially the cyan region. For example, lighting can have an influence on activity levels throughout the day, including waking up in the morning, being active throughout the day, and encouraging sleep at night. While Vitasolis provides a very natural white colour, part of its spectrum contains a larger amount of energy in the cyan region, between the wavelengths of 470nm and 520nm which helps control the human circadian rhythm.

Zumbtobel is also utilising NICHIA’s Optisolis technology that provides a natural light source with a spectrum that achieves the industry’s closest match to that of the standard illuminant, including both the sun and incandescent. Optisolis is optimised for the general lighting market and is accomplished through the company’s proprietary blue chip and phosphor technology. Importantly, the light does not emit UV energy that can degrade materials and is evident in other light sources, including other market available LEDs.
