Electronics World brings you a webinar on debugging your embedded designs. Neil Sherman of Tag-Connect and Phil Salmony of Phil’s Lab will discuss some of the trickiest debugging problems they have encountered over the years.
Neil Sherman is Tag-Connect MD and Founder, who has spent his career getting the most out of low-power electronics. Phil Salmony is an industry influencer, focusing on hardware and PCB design.
In this webinar, Neil and Phil trade stories about their toughest bugs in “Lessons from the debug bench”, including:
- Complexity causes the worst bugs. Neil describes a design where every part passed its tests and the system still fell apart. Another had around seven event queues, and nobody could see what was pending.
- Phil’s team heard random tones in their audio, barely above the noise floor, and only when units were cascaded. He explains where the cause was hiding.
- Plug in a debugger, scope or laptop and some analogue designs get worse. Both engineers have seen it.
- Phil was strongly opposed to AI for embedded work until February. He now says it can write much of the setup code, but his verdict on AI-routed PCBs is less flattering. Neil puts the design itself at maybe 80% of the job.
