Coronavirus threatens Embedded World and Mobile World Congress 2020 as electronics companies withdraw from attending

News

Coronavirus has taken the world by storm, forcing public facilities such as schools and health clinics to close in several countries. Its fast and furious infectiousness now threatens major industry exhibitions – Embedded World 2020 and Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020.

Semiconductor giant STMicroelectronics (ST) today withdrew from participating as an exhibitor in both events.

STMicroelectronics has taken the decision to withdraw from exhibiting at MWC 2020 in Barcelona and at Embedded World in Nuremberg later this month. The company has been closely following the situation related to the novel Coronavirus outbreak in China and has taken a number of precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of its employees worldwide,” stated a press announcement issued by the $9.56bn global firm. “We thank the GSMA and the Nürnberg Messe GmbH for their understanding and we look forward to attending and supporting their events in the future.”

The announcement was closely preceded by that of US-based provider of software and services to communications companies, Amdocs.

“Due to Coronavirus, Amdocs announces its decision not to attend MWC Barcelona 2020,” stated its press announcement.

Amdocs’s management states that it is “prioritising the health and safety of its employees, customers and partners” and will not attend the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020 in Barcelona.

“In the face of the public health concern from the novel Coronavirus, we are placing the highest priority on protecting the health of our employees, customers and partners. While we appreciate the precautionary measures put into place by the GSMA, we believe the safest option is not to attend MWC 2020 in Barcelona,” said Shuky Sheffer, president and chief executive officer, Amdocs.

Other firms have followed suit, including Microchip, Digi-Key and ROHM Semiconductor.

“ROHM Semiconductor Europe has taken the prudent decision to withdraw from Embedded World 2020 after a full assessment of the risks related to a fast-moving situation of the spread of the novel coronavirus,” it was released in a statement.

Embedded World runs from the 25th to the 27th of February in Nuremberg, Germany, and MWC20 from the 24th to the 27th of February in Barcelona, Spain.

* Since the publishing this story, MWC20 has been cancelled.
