MontaVista webinars help RTOS developers migrate legacy device drivers to embedded Linux

MontaVista Software, the specialist in embedded Linux commercialization, has announced open registration for two new educational webinars. The online webinars, on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, will deliver helpful information for device developers who are looking to migrate their device interfaces from the VxWorks RTOS to embedded Linux. Information and registration is available at www.mvista.com/migrationwebinar

With the accelerating pace of application development and increasingly shorter product life cycles, the ability to re-use and migrate legacy software to new platforms is paramount. Migrating from legacy RTOS-based designs to embedded Linux presents a range of engineering challenges, but also opportunities for refining I/O architecture and formalizing system interfaces.

Attendees will get an understanding of the particulars of migrating intricate legacy VxWorks device interfaces and embedded Linux community best practices. They will also learn about the architecture and conventions of drivers built for VxWorks, and will receive straightforward guidelines for mapping code and constructs onto Linux 2.6. The webinar will examine options for kernel and user space implementations, highlight licensing implications, and present migration and debugging tools and techniques. Each attendee of the webinar will receive a white paper on migrating legacy VxWorks device interfaces to embedded Linux.

Moderated by Don Dingee, editorial director for OpenSystems Media, the webinar "Migrating legacy VxWorks device interfaces to embedded Linux" will be presented by Bill Weinberg, independent analyst and consultant at Linuxpundit.com.  Weinberg brings two decades of open source, embedded and open systems, telecoms, and other technology experience to his role at Linuxpundit.com. Previously, at Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), Weinberg was Senior Technology Analyst and managed OSDL Mobile Linux and Carrier Grade Linux Initiatives. He is well known for his writing and speaking on topics ranging from global adoption of Linux to embedded/real-time computing, from application porting and migration to licensing and standardization, and from telecom infrastructure to mobile applications.

MontaVista is offering the webinar at two times on Tuesday, December 9. An early session at 7 a.m. EST allows attendance by developers in Europe and the Middle East, while a later session at 4 p.m. EST provides convenience for audiences in the Americas. Each webinar is scheduled for one hour, including time for questions from the audience. Admission is complimentary and all information will be presented via the Internet, including computer-streamed audio. Details are available online at www.mvista.com/migrationwebinar
