Digi releases 868 MHz wireless modules and device adapters for European M2M markets with 40 kilometer range

Digi International has today introduced XBee-PRO 868 embeddable RF modules and standalone device adapters, powerful XBee products that provide up to 40 kilometers of RF line-of-sight (LOS) transmission.  The products are ideal for machine-to-machine (M2M) applications in challenging terrain or long-range environments such as remote sensor networks, building automation applications, Automatic Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Customers using the XBee-PRO 868 can easily migrate to other XBee solutions including pin-compatible 900 MHz options used primarily in North America, and 2.4 GHz ZigBee and proprietary options available globally.

"The XBee-PRO 868 adds exceptional range performance to the XBee product family for European deployments," said Larry Kraft, senior vice president of global sales and marketing, Digi International. "And because it's an XBee, customers can address varying global wireless requirements by swapping modules in the same basic design."

The XBee-PRO 868 operates on the 868 MHz Short Range Device (SRD) G3 band for Europe providing comparable RF range characteristics as 900 MHz solutions in the U.S. Its outstanding range is fuelled by its strong transmission power. Where similar 2.4 GHz devices are limited to 10 mW of transmission power, the XBee-PRO 868 is capable of 500 mW of EIRP (equivalent isotropically radiated power). It also provides best-in-class receive sensitivity, rated at -112 dBm. Additionally, the XBee-PRO 868 features multiple antenna options, over-the-air configuration, strong 128-bit AES encryption for security and an industrial temperature rating of -40 to 85 º Celsius. A low-cost 868 MHz mesh solution is also in development.

In addition to OEM RF modules, serial and USB device adapters are available. An analog I/O and digital I/O adapter are also in development.  These adapters allow customers to use XBee technology through a common hardware interface without the need for embedded development.  In addition, Digi's line of ConnectPort X gateways with XBee-PRO 868 technology will be available in Q1 2009 allowing customers to access XBee-PRO 868 networks via Ethernet, Wi-Fi and cellular backhaul networks. The product extensibility allows customers to match the best hardware solution for their application.
