TDK multilayer capacitor first to offer settable ESR
TDK Corporation has developed the industry's first Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors
(MLCCs) to offer settable Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR). ESR values can now be set to any value within a specified range to control circuit impedance in smoothing and decoupling circuitry. As the ESR values of capacitors can now be set, changes in impedance between circuit elements over a broad range of frequencies can be minimised. This limits voltage variation, stabilises the current signal and eliminates effects on other circuits, without the need for additional components.
Demand for reduced mounting areas and component miniaturisation has resulted in power-supply circuit boards with higher mounting densities. Using multiple capacitors of different types often means that impedances must be adjusted over broad frequency ranges using additional components to avoid the effects of the minute electrical resistance elements present in the capacitors that cause interference and lower noise suppression effects.
To enable designers to overcome these challenges without using a large number of additional components, TDK used its strengths in materials technology and multilayering technology to develop a new internal structure for their MLCCs that enables their ESR values to be set. The new capacitors are suitable for use in applications that require high quality power supply, such as communications base stations and high-end PCs, as well as applications that require reduced component count and mounting areas.
The capacitors are currently available in 1608 and 2012 case sizes, measuring 1.6 mm × 0.8 mm × 0.8 mm and 2.0 mm × 1.25 mm × 0.85 mm respectively. Both case sizes offer a rated voltage from 4V to 6.3V, X5R characteristics, and use a mounting method that is the same as that used for two-terminal products, making switching from existing components easy.
The 1608 case-size parts offer maximum capacitance values up to 1µF with settable ESR from 10mO to 1,200mO. The 2012 case-size parts offer capacitance values up to 10µF with settable ESR from 10mO to 500mO. The ESR series is available now in sample and production quantities.
