Yokogawa launches new compact optical spectrum analyser

The new Yokogawa AQ6375 is the 'world's first' optical spectrum analyser to combine a wide wavelength range of 1200 to 2400 nm with high resolution - between 50 pm and 2 nm - and high sensitivity of -70 dBm or better.

Complementing Yokogawa's well-established range of optical spectrum analysers covering wavelengths from 600 to 1700 nm, the AQ6375 is a compact, easy-to-use high-resolution optical spectrum analyser for the 2 µm wavelength band. As such, it is uniquely suited to address the test requirements of 2 µm optical passive components and light sources such as the latest thulium lasers.

The new analyser is particularly aimed at supporting the research and development of new-generation high-performance optical laser sources such as optically pumped semiconductor disk lasers (OPSDLs) in the 1.2-2.4 µm wavelength area, which are attracting interest in environmental sensing and security applications.

Yokogawa's unique free-space optical input will make it easy to connect the signal to be measured in both free emitted configurations and connected to optical fibres of diameters between 5 and 800 µm.

Because of its high reliability and the factory calibration in terms of wavelength level as well as resolution, the AQ6375 is the first optical spectrum analyser that can be used for instant 'switch on and go' high-accuracy calibrated measurements of parameters such as SMSR, wavelength, peak level and centre wavelength, and OSNR.

By using the wide resolution setting, the AQ6375 can also be used to evaluate broadband light sources or to make use of so-called 'super-continuum' light sources connected through the passive device under test to the analyser.

Applications for the new optical spectrum analyser include enhancing the performance of optical components in areas such molecular spectroscopy, military countermeasures, gas sensing, medical diagnostics and therapy, long-range LIDAR, free-space optical communication, optical pumping of longer wavelength solid-state lasers, material processing and security systems.
