COG workshops outline best-practice in Obsolescence Management

Wed 14 October 2009 - Wed 10 March 2010

Workshops help OEMs to minimise the risk, and cost, of component obsolescence:

Long-term component storage: 14 October 2009, St Albans UK

Measuring obsolescence strategy performance: 20 January 2010, St Albans

Developing an obsolescence strategy: 10 March 2010, Leeds

The Component Obsolescence Group (COG) UK announces a series of three workshops for which will help OEMs to reduce the risk and cost of component obsolescence. The workshops will cover long-term component storage, development of an appropriate obsolescence strategy, and measuring the performance of an obsolescence strategy.

Ian Blackman, CEO of COG UK, explains; "The COG workshops are master-classes in obsolescence management, designed to give buyers and engineers, as well as obsolescence managers and company directors, the knowledge to implement best-practice in key areas of obsolescence management."

The workshop on long-term component storage will be held on 14 October 2009 in St Albans, UK. It will outline current long-term storage techniques for dice, wafers, components, modules and equipment, as well as comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

The workshop on measuring the performance of an obsolescence strategy will be held in St Albans on 20 January 2010. Drawing on new procurement processes implemented in the defence and other sectors, this workshop will provide delegates with methods for assessing the return on their investment in obsolescence management, and for monitoring the performance of sub-contractors and suppliers. The metrics allow for a comparison of contractor performance at the bidding stage of a contract, and for the measuring performance against contractor incentives during the implementation of the contract. They also allow OEMs to assess risk management performance and ensure that the risk has been placed at the correct point in the supply chain.

Designed to help delegates to understand different approaches to obsolescence management, the workshop on developing an obsolescence strategy will be held on 10 March 2010 in Leeds, UK. During the workshop, delegates will discuss their own obsolescence objectives and learn how to define appropriate strategies for different corporate and product scenarios. The workshop will cover obsolescence notifications, procurement strategies, obsolescence in design and monitoring tools.

The workshops are open to any buyer, engineer or manager whose role includes responsibility for maintaining continuity of supply of components, or continuity of support for products in the field.

In addition to the scheduled workshops, COG also provides bespoke industry- or company-specific workshops on issues related to obsolescence management and counterfeit component detection and avoidance. More information about COG workshops is available on www.cog.org.uk/workshops.asp or via email to admin@cog.org.uk
